Comedy Is Not for The Faint-Hearted
10:06am May 17, 2012
It’s been widely believed that comedy can be used as a tool of social critics and the practice is not really new because even in the New Order era, Warkop DKI and Bagito, two national comedy greats, had used humor to tease on political issues. The rise of local stand-up comedy scene promises the chance to repeat that feat although the slapstick comedy that has been more popular means there’s a hill to climb.

Buckle Up, The Premier League’s Finale Is Coming
9:16am May 12, 2012
What’s the odds of former Manchester United players scoring a brace of own goals when they play against their old club? Considering how shambolic they have been recently, United will need more than just an ordinary performance when they play Sunderland to bring back the league title to Old Trafford for the 20th time.

Police Batons Shrink Every Time They See Bamboo Sticks
8:20am May 11, 2012
Is there any national institution that, despite the enormous amount of its authority, is more powerless than the police? The police always show their incompetence when it comes to dealing with angry radical groups. I begin to think that every time rocker Ikang Fawzi appears on TV ads for erectile dysfunction medication, the ad is actually aimed at the police’s authority.

Why I Don’t Get International Footballers Meet & Greets
10:17pm May 4, 2012
As an avid football fan who follows the game religiously regardless of which teams are playing, I dreamed of meeting international football superstars when I was little. David Beckham topped my list, followed by Ryan Giggs and the rest of the Manchester United squad. I also fancied Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer — they were not too bad either. Those are the names I really wanted meet, but I wouldn't have minded meeting any other international football player. These players are meant to be gods. There are big gods, small gods, but to the fans, they’re still gods.

Surprise Champions League Finalists Deserve Their Places
7:59am Apr 28, 2012
There’s a lot of reasons to mute pre-match and post-match commentary on European football by local pundits. One of those reasons was exhibited by a so-called football analyst after Real Madrid played Bayern Munich mid-week. After a thrilling match that saw the German team dominate for 120 minutes, the analyst elucidated his football wisdom to the nation by suggesting that the Champions League final that pits Munich against Chelsea is “not ideal.”

Negative Football Is Not a Crime
9:19am Apr 21, 2012
In the wake of Chelsea’s astonishing 1-0 victory against Barcelona, the joga bonito radicals were back to bash Roberto Di Matteo’s strategy to sit back and defend deep, making it a one-sided contest which resulted in Barcelona’s 24 shots-on-goal compared to one by Chelsea. Their argument is negative football kills the game and shouldn’t be practiced on the pitch because it is ugly to watch.

With his middle finger raised and the fatherly smile glued on his face, the same smile that can be seen on billboards around the capital, the governor looked cool and firm. It’s some sort of a non-verbal communication that reflects his thoughts on the people.

National Football Saga Still Has a Long Way to Go
8:06am Apr 14, 2012
Just when you think that Indonesian football can’t get any more ridiculous, the shadow Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) that goes by the name of Indonesian Savior Football Committee (KPSI) came up with a brilliant idea: A shadow national team that consists of players from the breakaway Indonesian Super League who, according to a law enforced by FIFA, cannot play in the legal national team.

Roberto Mancini’s Imaginary Letter to Mario Balotelli
10:27am Apr 10, 2012
I know a genius when I see one. That’s why I took you out of the dark period in Inter Milan. I believed in your talent, as your goalscoring record has proved. Nineteen goals in 39 league matches, not too shabby. But I’ve now become aware of why Jose Mourinho thought you were unmanageable. You’re a wild stallion that cannot be tamed
