Alcohol Shipments to be Released ‘Soon’

After being hit with a hefty fine for under-reporting imports of alcohol, state importer PT Sarinah said on Tuesday that dozens of containers would soon be released from Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok port to meet the increased demand during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Custom officials have detained 34 containers of wines and spirits imported by Sarinah because company executives had understated the value of the shipments.

Hotel and restaurant owners say the delay has resulted in shortages of alcoholic beverages around the country.

“They [Sarinah executives] have to revise their invoices, but by law the fine is 1,000 percent [of the total value of the goods],” Anwar Suprijadi, the Finance Ministry’s director general of customs and excise, told the Jakarta Globe on Tuesday.

He would not reveal the value of Sarinah’s shipments.

Anwar said customs officials would not releases the containers until Sarinah had paid the fine.

However, Sarinah president director Jimmy M Rifai Gani told the Jakarta Globe he had spoken “to the tax and customs officials and cleared up the problem.”

Eight of the containers had already been released with the next 26 expected to be released “soon,” Jimmy said, without elaborating.

On Friday, Jimmy had predicted the problem would be solved within a week.

Tutum Rahanta, the managing director of the Association of Indonesian Retailers (Aprindo), had earlier suspected corruption was behind the sudden seasonal holdup.
