Not to be suspicious or whatever, am I the only one here kinda surprised with a 1M$ contract renewal bonus offered by an Indo company to a paper engineer?

I can smell something pretty fishy here.

Canada love to defend baby Seal slaughter too...Only the anti christ would be in favour of killing something so sweet.

wongdeso. Were the comment section of Jakarta Globe a comment section in Facebook, you would have long been banned for the 'hate' nature of your comments. They are seldom factual and never have I read one positive criticism from you. You seem bent on stirring up emotions of anger and while pathetic intimidation at most they may be, it is this kind of baseless emotional hate, that when given media to fan the flames, can spill over into social conflict. JG , is there anyway to have this 'commenter' reported, possibly banned. It is ultimately your responsibility.

Unlike other countries the Canadian Government does nothing to protect its nationals when they are overseas. They would want to jeapordize potential Hockey Skate or Maple Syrup exports by acting on their nationals behalf.

@wongndeso - are you being sarcastic (not very successful though) or just simply nasty?

I just hope that none of your friends or relatives will ever see the inside of a jail for some accusations and has a taste of justice a la "Indonesia". I am sure if that would happen (which I truly hope it will not) your sense of "humor" will not be rewarded by your peers.

Oh, I see now your perogative - he's "just" a foreigner, so easy to have a hearty laugh on his behalf....

A Canadian project manager has lost 20 kilograms and fallen into a “deep depression” since he was taken into custody in Indonesia in July for what his lawyer says are false charges of corporate espionage.

Lawyer Timothy Inkiriwang told The Vancouver Sun that his client, Rick van Lee, and his wife, Nieves Navarro, was placed under house arrest on May 31, before van Lee was taken into custody in Pekanbaru, Riau, on July 5 on charges of stealing or altering electronic documents belonging to others.

While under house arrest, van Lee had suffered a minor stroke and been hospitalized.

Navarro told the paper in an email that her husband, who worked in Vancouver and Quebec in the 1980s, had lost 20 kilograms since the ordeal began and become depressed.

“Seeing my husband being so humiliated ... is beyond comprehension, but I keep hoping,” she said. “Everyday [that] passes is one less day to finally get through this nightmare.”

Inkiriwang was quoted as saying that van Lee’s problems began when he rejected a $1 million offer to remain with Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) and chose to sign with rival Asia Pulp and Paper.

He said APRIL then accused van Lee of stealing company secrets when he was found in possession of a “backed-up company data,” which his client said he had permission for and “was protecting the data as part of his duty as a project manager.”

The Canadian Embassy in Jakarta told the paper that they would not comment on the case because of privacy concerns.

“All they [Canadian officials] said to us was that they want the legal process to take place first, and then we’ll see the result,” Inkiriwang was quoted as saying. “They don’t care about all the abnormal things that have happened ever since the case started in June 2011.”

The paper said van Lee is facing eight years in jail.
