The French Embassy has been enlisted to help PT Carrefour Indonesia resolve disputes that have led to the closure of one of its Jakarta stores and a threat to close a Palembang outlet, a company lawyer said on Tuesday.

Carrefour Indonesia is the local unit of the world’s largest retail chain, France-based Carrefour,

“The French ambassador [Philippe Zeller] will become involved to seek the help of the central government to resolve issues surrounding Carrefour’s Pluit and Palembang outlets,” Amir Syamsuddin, the retailer’s lawyer, said on Tuesday.

Irawan D Kadarman, a company spokesman, said on Tuesday that the chain’s outlet in Pluit Village, North Jakarta, was closed down on Aug. 2 by PT Duta Wisata Loka, the management company that runs the development.

He also confirmed that Carrefour had sought help from the French Embassy.

Amir accused Duta Wisata of forcing the store to close despite having a lease that was valid until 2019. He also said that the firm’s action had been reported to the police. Duta Wisata management could not be reached for comment.

“We are also going to report the matter to the Business Competition Supervisory Agency [KPPU] as there are suspicions of unhealthy competition afoot,” Amir said, declining to elaborate.

Dominique Roubert, a French Embassy spokesman, declined to comment on the matter when contacted by the Jakarta Globe.

Irawan dismissed an allegation by Duta Wisata that Carrefour had violated a 2002 local government ordinance that required supermarkets to be located at least 2.5 kilometers away from the nearest traditional market.

Irawan also said Carrefour’s outlet in Palembang had been told to vacate its premises on Aug. 3 by building manager PT Bayu Jaya Lestari Sukses. Carrefour said the lease was valid until 2023.
