We do not need anymore Malls, what we need is a modern International standard Library, similar to Library Congress in Wash.D.C. Indonesia, a great and proud Nation, should have a modern Library as a symbol of Wisdom and Intelectual. I suggest that LIPPO group to sit down with Fauze Bowo and come with a mutual agreement to build a combo purpose side by side, eg.: build a permanent eco-environment Modern Library for public use and a Mall as a compliment good for 25 years contract. This way its a win win solution to break the barrier. WE NEED A MODERN LIBRARY, ideally build near the DPR compound, so that the Lawmakers can always drop by to do research in the Library, instead of going overseas for Comparison Study trip (Jalan Jalan Studi Banding).

While it was still unclear whether the city had lost a legal battle with a private property developer planning to build a mall on a plot of state land, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said on Friday that said if his administration had indeed lost, it would immediately file an appeal and continue the legal case.

Fauzi was referring to a ruling by the Jakarta State Administrative Court (PTUN) in a case centering on Taman Ria Senayan, a sprawling plot of state land adjacent to the legislative complex.

The PTUN has issued a statement on its Web site saying a decision was made in the case on Jan. 18, but it has not elaborated on the contents of the ruling.

The city administration was sued for suspending developer Ariobimo Laguna Perkasa’s permit to build on the plot of land after lawmakers complained.

The developer said it was planning to build a mall on the site that would be operated by the Lippo Group, with which the Jakarta Globe is affiliated.

Fauzi said on Friday he would consult the leadership of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) — all legislative institutions housed in the complex next to Taman Ria Senayan.

“We want the MPR, the DPR and the DPD to be involved in this case directly because they are the ones who do not want commercial buildings to arise in that area,” Fauzi told reporters.

Calls to the PTUN went unanswered on Friday, while the Jakarta Legal Bureau said as long as it had not received a copy of the ruling, it could not comment on its contents.

Hari Sasongko Kushadi, the head of the city’s Building Control and Monitoring Office (P2B), said on Friday that he was preparing strategies for “the next step” but refused to elaborate.

Indopacific Edelman, a public relations consultancy firm hired by Ariobimo, also would not comment on the case.

Lawmakers, arguing the city already has enough malls and needs more open, green public spaces, have opposed the project from the start and demanded the land be used for a park instead.

The State Secretariat leased the land to Ariobimo for 25 years, beginning last year, in 2008.
