US mining giant Freeport McMoRan’s Indonesian subsidiary said on Friday it would appoint an engineer as its new president following a months-long strike at a mine in the restive province of Papua.

Rozik Soetjipto will replace Armando Mahler, who served as chief operating officer and president of PT Freeport Indonesia since 2006 and will now act as an advisor to the executive committee.

The decision comes after around 8,000 of Freeport’s 23,000 workers went on strike on September 15 over pay and conditions, crippling production at one of the world’s largest gold and copper mines in Papua province.

The strike at the Grasberg mine, which has not been fully resolved, triggered a spate of violence, with at least eight people killed in ambush attacks and clashes with police in the already troubled province.

“The new management organization will enable us to renew our commitment to operate the Grasberg mine in Papua in a safe, efficient and world class fashion for the benefit of our employees, the local community, and the Republic of Indonesia,” Soetjipto said in a statement.
