Indonesia Cocoa Exports Increase 1.4%, But Demand Remains Weak
Cocoa exports from the country’s main growing region of Sulawesi rose 1.4 percent to 274,887 metric tons in 2009 from 2008, the Indonesian Cocoa Association (Askindo) said.
“Weak demand is the main problem that affected our exports,” said Herman Agan, head of the association’s Central Sulawesi branch. “Production and the condition of the crop were actually better than in 2008 because we didn’t experience any weather problems last year.”
The price of cocoa, the key ingredient in chocolate, gained 23.4 percent last year on concern production would trail demand. Ivory Coast is the world’s biggest cocoa producer, followed by Ghana. Bloomberg
