Indonesia Cocoa Exports to US Still Face ‘Automatic Detention’
Cocoa beans from Indonesia continue to contend with the “automatic detention” ruling imposed by the United States due to the alleged presence of contaminants.
Automatic detention means that beans are held in quarantine until cleared for consumption, which results in their having to be sold at lower prices. “We are still struggling to escape from automatic detention in the US. We need to improve the quality of our cocoa beans,” Achmad Mangga Barani, the director general of plantations at the Ministry of Agriculture, said in Jakarta on Wednesday. As a result of automatic detention, Indonesian cocoa beans are currently fetching $200 below the market price per ton. JG
