Indonesian businessman and movie producer Mike Wiluan has built what are believed to be the biggest film studios in Southeast Asia.
Syamsul Lussa, from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, said Infinite Studio, constructed on 10 hectares of land in Nogsa, Batam, would have a positive impact on the economy.
“Infinite seems to be the biggest film studio in Southeast Asia and it employs many people, therefore this is very good for the economy,” Syamsul was quoted by Detik.com as saying on Monday.
He said the studio employed between 200 to 300 people.
Syamsul said he hoped foreign film companies would be interested in producing their movies in Indonesia.
“If foreign film makers make their movies here, we will benefit from the transfer of knowledge and technology,” he said.
Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu has previously said the studio was expected to produce quality movies.
“I hope the studio will be the source of creativity and a lot of fantastic movies will be produced here,” Mari said during the studio’s soft opening on Nov. 5.
Wiluan has built Infinite Frameworks (IFW) from a fledgling Singapore-based post-production house to a blossoming media and entertainment player with services such as post-production and visual effects for TV commercials, feature films, TV series, documentaries and animation production.
Going global was the key reason he bought a 90 percent stake in IFW through a consortium.
“It would be easier to approach or be approached by international clients if you are based in Singapore,” the 36-year-old told the Peak magazine earlier this year.
The studio will fully operational by the end of the month.
