Refined tin exports from Indonesia, the world’s largest exporter, dropped 20 percent in January compared with the previous month due to low supplies of raw materials, a Trade Ministry official said.
Shipments fell to 6,774.6 tons last month from 8,508.4 tons in December, according to Alberth Yusuf Tubogu, export director for industry and mining at the Trade Ministry.
“Heavy rains disrupted mining activities in Bangka, reducing supplies of tin ore to smelters,” Alberth said. Bangka island is the country’s main tin-ore producing area.
Reduced supplies from Indonesia may help to support the price of the tin, which is used in soldering. Tin prices have fallen by 2 percent this year, after rising by more than 50 percent last year.
Tin exports came from 10 companies, including PT Timah, the country’s biggest tin producing company, and PT Koba Tin, a unit of Malaysia Smelting, Alberth said. Bloomberg
