Ok, Tifatul, early next year. We are going to keep you to your promise. The international telecom networks are already queueing up to comply.

What does a data centre do for anything other than Blackberry? Nothing.

My email is encrypted on the phone and sent to a server outside Indonesia. I do not want the government in this country to read my business emails. I DO NOT trust them one inch. I am not paranoid about being tracked by the mobile networks for the purposes of providing me with information based on my location, but having the corrupt and unlawful Indonesian government reading by emails, no bloody thanks.

Waky

I think you are missing the point. This is about taking away your freedoms - its not a jot to do with investment - in reality a data centre will create only a few jobs, it will create almost zero revenues and as BB suggests we should be looking at the true motives -

Bad argument I think

waky - Sorry, but what has the government wanting to eavesdrop on private text conversations got to do with BB's investment strategy?

Are you happy to have everything you say in your text messages and emails accessible to a very corrupt government, who have an appalling human rights record, and have very suspect motives?

Communications and Information Technology Minister Tifatul Sembiring says the government will issue a regulation requiring that all telecommunications companies operating in Indonesia build data centers.

The move appears targeted at Research in Motion, the makers of BlackBerry.

On Friday, the ministry said it would likely shut down the company’s BlackBerry internet service.

Speaking on Tuesday, Tifatul said a regulation was in the process of being drafted.

“The regulation that has been drafted mainly requires all international telecommunications networks operating in Indonesia to build data centers, or servers,” Tifatul said at the presidential palace. “So, our notification will be a warning because building a data center is not easy — it cannot be done in one or two days and it is expensive.”

Tifatul said that the ministry had already notified the international telecommunications networks operating in Indonesia.

“When the regulation is ready, we’re going to summon them,” he said.

He said it was expected the regulation would be issued early next year.
