Malaysia’s Atomic Energy Licensing Board detected radiation on four workers at a company near the country’s capital, a minister said.

Radiation was detected on June 2 at the premises of Austral-Euro Diagnosis Sdn., a radiopharmaceutical company in Subang Jaya on June 2, which was subsequently sealed, Maximus Johnity Ongkili, minister of science, technology and innovation told reporters today in Putrajaya. There was no radiation exposure outside the building, he said.

“The contamination on the four workers was less than 1 percent of radioactivity administered to cancer patients and hence, does not cause any health effects especially with the short half life,” he said.

“The exposure was only around the production area of the laboratory and there were no traces outside the building.”

Austral-Euro, which started operations a year ago, submitted a report on June 6 to outline measures to improve its radiation protection program and re-train its workers to avoid future incidents, he said.

The company has appealed for the removal of the seal, saying it has complied with the license conditions and implemented safety measures, he said. A decision will be made soon on the company’s appeal, said the minister.
