Mitsubishi Materials, Japan’s third-largest copper producer, said it planned a 20-day maintenance shutdown of its Gresik smelter in May.
The closure of Mitsubishi’s PT Smelting unit “will start from May 1,” Kenichi Watase, general manager of the sales department, said on Wednesday.
Production is expected to be flat this year at 287,000 metric tons of the metal, he added. PT Smelting, which increased production capacity to 300,000 tons in September from 270,000 tons, is 60.5 percent owned by Mitsubishi Materials, with Freeport-McMoran holding a 25 percent stake.
The smelter’s output is sold to Indonesia and neighboring countries.
