North Maluku governor Thaib Armayin said the province would become a nickel industry center in the next decade, with two nickel plants slated to be built on Halmahera island.
In an address to mark the province’s 12th anniversary on Wednesday, the governor said the nickel operations would be worth a combined Rp 84 trillion ($9.5 billion) and were expected to be operational before 2020. Thaib said the plants would contribute to local tax revenues as well as provide jobs and boost the growth of other businesses in the region.
