PT Pertamina is resuming diesel imports this month after having cancelled two months of shipments from Kuwait because of excessive stockpiles, the state-owned oil and gas company said on Monday.
Pertamina plans to import 2.2 million barrels of diesel in June as well as its continuing monthly shipments of 3.5 million barrels of premium gasoline, said Basuki Trikora Putra, Pertamina’s vice president for communication said.
Pertamina usually imports 3 million barrels of diesel from the Middle East per month, but in April the company ran up a stockpile of 161,000 kiloliters of diesel, or 35 days of reserves, up from the standard 25 days, as demand slowed along with the economy.
“Pertamina will resume imports as national demand is increasing,” Basuki said, rejecting claims that the resumation of diesel imports was connected to the Cilacap refinery, whose operations were disrupted last week by a fire.
Pertamina’s refineries are expected to produce 99.4 million barrels of diesel this year. The Tri Wahana Universal refinery in Bojonegoro, East Java, is expected to begin production of 6,000 barrels per day in August, with the privately-owned Muba refinery in Musi Banyuasin, South Sumatra, expected to come on stream shortly after to provide 600 bpd, Evita Legowo, director general of oil and gas at the ministry, said in March.
Pertamina operates six refineries with total refining capacity of 1.04 million barrels a day, enough to process the 900,000-plus bpd that the company produces itself, but not enough to cope with the shortfall it must import, primarily for the transportation sector.
Pertamina currently imports 30 percent of the country’s refined oil products.
