PLN Studying $980m In Transmission Projects
State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara will begin conducting a feasibility study in January on a number of transmission projects that would be financed by multilateral agencies.
“Consultants will start the study in January and we expect it to be finished within six months,” PLN’s director for planning and technology, Bambang Praptono, said on Friday.
The projects under consideration are an upgrade of the power transmission line that links Java and Bali, with an estimated cost of $340 million; a regional project that would connect West Kalimantan with Malaysia’s Sarawak state with a capacity of 275 kilovolts and an estimated cost of $150 million; and a submarine transmission line linking Sumatra and Malaysia’s Melaka with a capacity of 500 kilovolts and an estimated cost of $490 million.
The Indonesia-Malaysia connection program is part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations power grid project that is aimed at solving the chronic energy shortages suffered by some Asean member countries. It is expected to be up and running by 2015.
The Java-Bali transmission line is aimed at making electricity distribution in Java and Bali more efficient.
