State-owned fertilizer producer PT Pupuk Kaltim is in the tender phase to find a contractor to build a $850 million fertilizer plant in East Kalimantan, which will produce 1.2 million tons of urea a year.

“As many as five foreign companies and three local companies are participating in the tender,” Pupuk Kaltim’s president director, Hidayat Nyakman, said on Thursday. “We expect to finalize the tender process by October this year and the project could be finished within 33 months.”

Hidayat said the contractors were required to set up a consortium between foreign and local companies, led by the local company.

He said the participating contractors were Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Toyo; Italy’s Maire Tecnimont; a consortium of South Korea’s Hyundai and Italy’s Saipem; and a consortium of South Korea’s Samsung and Germany’s Uhde. The local companies are PT Inti Karya Persada Tehnik, PT Rekayasa Industri and PT Tripatra.
