Mining company Gemala Borneo Utama is exploring Romang Island in Southwest Maluku for gold and associated metals, a Maluku resources official said on Wednesday.

“The exploration is still at a general stage as the company has five mining permits across Romang Island,” Ronny Kakerissa said.

“If a gold deposit with promising economic value is found, it will have a strategic impact on the development in the Southwest Maluku district.”

The Jakarta-based GBU is a subsidiary of Australia-based Robust Resources, which is currently undertaking a 27,000-meter drilling program on the island.
