Indonesia’s rupiah continued to drop on Thursday, a day after Sri Mulyani Indrawati resigned as finance minister and amid growing concerns that Greece’s debt crisis is spreading to other euro-zone countries, traders said.
The decline forced the central bank to intervene.
“I suspect Bank Indonesia is behind [the dollar] selling near the Rp 9,180 level,” a trader in Jakarta said.
The high-yielding rupiah lost just over 1 percent to 9,195 per dollar, despite the central bank intervention.
Investor sentiment was also undermined by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati’s resignation on Wednesday, as she had played a key role in improving the economy, traders said.
