Sinar Mas Seeks to Convince Unilever on Deforestation
Sinar Mas Group will hire an independent consultant to attempt to convince Unilever to start buying its palm oil again. In December, Unilever, the world’s biggest buyer of crude palm oil, suspended a $32 million contract with the Indonesian conglomerate until Sinar Mas could prove that its plantations were not contributing to deforestation.
“We will have an independent consultant verify the truth of the report used by Unilever to stop buying CPO from us,” Daud Darsono, president director of Sinar Mas subsidiary PT Smart, said on Monday. Unilever’s decision was based on data that had not been independently verified, Daud said.
