East Kalimantan will soon have a new state-run power plant after a consortium led by state construction company Wijaya Karya secured a Rp 925 billion ($104 million) contract to build it.

The contract for engineering, procurement and construction, calls for Wijaya Karya, known as Wika, to construct two gas-fired power plants, each with a 60-megawatt capacity and owned by state gas distributor Perusahaan Gas Negara.

The plants will be located in Tanjung Batu village, in East Kalimantan’s Kutai district. Construction is expected to begin in early March and will take 18 months to complete. Wika, which is responsible for 46 percent of the project, is collaborating with builders Mega Eltra and Navigat, which are responsible for 39 percent and 15 percent, respectively. Wika will build the plant, install the gas turbine, stack and silencer, and balance the plant fuel system, water treatment plant and power transformer.

“With the 46 percent portion, [Wika’s] pay for the contract is Rp 425.7 billion,” said Natal Argawan Pardede, Wika’s corporate secretary. Natal added that the first plant would begin operating by June 2013 and the second by August that year.

Wika says it hopes to secure at least Rp 32.09 trillion worth of contracts this year, from last year’s Rp 26.59 trillion.

It posted a 8.37 percent rise in profit to Rp 231.47 billion in the first nine months of 2011 from the same period in 2010. Revenue rose 38 percent to Rp 5.44 trillion.

Wika’s shares were unchanged at Rp 690 at Thursday’s closing.
