XL Axiata, Indonesia’s third-largest mobile-phone operator, projects subscriber numbers will rise 8.7 percent this year on growing demand from private consumers and corporations.

Hasnul Suhaimi, president director of XL Axiata, said on Wednesday that cellphone subscribers were expected to increase to 50 million this year from an estimated 46 million in 2011.

“Fifty percent of the subscribers are from the data and broadband service,’’ he said.

XL Axiata expects the numbers of its subscribers for data and broadband service to increase to 25 million this year from an estimated 23 million last year.

XL Axiata and other cellphone operators, including Telkomsel and Indosat, are shifting their business focus this year from voice calls and text messages to broadband business.

The voice call and text message service is “saturated already,’’ Hasnul said. “We will focus more on data.”

Total SIM card sales in Indonesia are at 250 million now, more than the 240 million total population, Hasnul said.

He said data service accounted for about 21 percent of the company’s revenue last year.
