Yamaha Motor Kencana Indonesia, the archipelago’s sole distributor of Yamaha motorbikes, trimmed its motorcycle sales this year due to delayed consumer purchases, a company executive said.

Eko Prabowo, the general manager for marketing and promotion, said sales were cut to 3.3 million units this year from an earlier estimate of 3.4 million units.

“There has been a sales target revision because Indonesian consumers have delayed motorbike purchases as they wait for the new model,’’ Eko said on Wednesday.

Yamaha sales reached 2.52 million units in the first nine months of this year, compared with 3.2 million units for Honda Motor, according to the Indonesia Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI).Honda motorbikes are distributed by Astra Honda Motor, a unit of Astra International, the country’s largest automotive distributor.

Both companies are competitors in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, where total motorcycle sales from January to September rose 13 percent to 6.2 million units from a year earlier, AISI said.

Eko said Yamaha will try to boost sales next year with several new models, including ones with automatic transmission. He said the company expects its motorcycle sales to grow by 5 percent and 10 percent next year.

AISI chairman Gunadi Sindhuwinata forecast in June that motorcycle sales will rise 9.2 percent to 8.3 million units this year from 7.6 million units in 2010.

Shares of Astra International rose 1.8 percent to Rp 69,300 on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) on Wednesday.
