Yes, and of course celebrity drug busts hit the headlines somewhat harder than preventing other lesser crimes. Great PR.

Once again, the foolish act of curing the symptoms and not the cause.

Could Indonesia soon see its high-flying celebrities fall in Hollywood-style drug busts?

If the Jakarta Police make good on their pledge, tabloids may soon be filled with embarrassing mug shots of famous celebrities caught snorting cocaine or smoking weed. And its all thanks to Hendra Samuel Simorangkir, vocalist with popular band Kerispatih.

Following the arrest of Hendra, better known as Sammy, for drug use earlier this week, a source at the Jakarta Police said on Thursday that they were now keeping a close eye on other celebrities suspected of enjoying the same habit.

Sammy, who was arrested at his boarding house in Karet Pedurenan, South Jakarta, has tested positive for drugs and police also found methamphetamine in his room.

Chief Comr. Anjan Pramuka Putra, head of the Jakarta Police narcotics division, said police had obtained more information after the arrest of a meth dealer identified as Iwan Kusumo who claimed to count celebrities among his customers.

“We will find out who his customers are,” Anjan said.

“We are now closely watching a few other celebrities who are suspected of using drugs,” the source said, adding that several celebrities were methamphetamine users.

“But some also use ecstasy pills,” the source said.

Most of the celebrities concerned were soap opera stars and singers he added.

The source said that police plan to conduct raids on a number of nightclubs popular with celebrities as well as upscale boarding houses in the city.
