Police believe the killer of student and part-time model Setianti Dwi Retno was a make-up artist whom the victim had known for only a week.

Setianti was murdered in her apartment at Mediterania Apartments in West Jakarta on Monday, police said.

Comr. Jhoni Iskandar, chief of the Tanjung Duren Police, told news portal okezone.com on Friday that the search was ongoing for the suspect, whom he declined to name. He said the man lived in Central Jakarta and police were optimistic of finding him because there are only a few makeup artists in the capital.

“Their community is small, so it is easy to trace them,” he said.

Jhoni had earlier told the Jakarta Globe that the identity of the killer had been determined after interviews with Setianti’s housemaid and friends. Police also reviewed security video from the apartment complex.

“We have questioned seven witnesses and obtained the CCTV tape. The murderer has been identified,” Jhoni said on Thursday.

The police believe Setianti let the suspect into her apartment because he had an appointment. Her maid told police the man was the last person to enter the apartment on Monday.

After he left, he allegedly told the maid that Setianti was sleeping and should not to be disturbed. The maid reportedly waited around the apartment complex for two days without food or drink.

Finally, after noticing the smell of decomposing flesh emerging from the apartment, the maid reported to the complex’s security, police said.

Setianti was found in her room on the 25th floor of Mediterania Apartments, Tower HE, on Wednesday at around 1:30 p.m., after her boyfriend broke down the door. She was lying face down in her underwear.

A postmortem examination revealed that she had been killed by blows to the head and temples with a blunt object.

Jhoni urged the apartment management to tighten security for guests, saying three murders had happened there in recent months.

“All the suspects gained entry because the victims allowed them. The apartment security should demand that every guest produces an ID card and leaves it before they can enter,” he said.
