A protester carrying a Molotov cocktail was arrested outside the House of Representatives on Tuesday during a demonstration involving 1,000 people demanding a thorough investigation of the PT Bank Century scandal and trials for anyone found to be involved in the allegedly illegal bailout.

Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar, Jakarta Police spokesman, said the protester, Sahroni, 24, was being interrogated and it had yet to be determined which group of protesters he was involved with. Besides the Molotov cocktail, Sahroni was carrying Rp 100,000 in cash and a lighter.

During the protest, banners were displayed with slogans such as “Try the Thief of Bank Century” and “Fire Finance Minister Sri Mulyani.”

Rijalul Imam, spokesman of the Indonesian Muslim Students Action Front (Kammi), said the government should resolve the case transparently and return money to Bank Century depositors to demonstrate that the state protected the interests of its citizens.

“We call on all House members and Indonesian people to closely monitor the investigation conducted by the House special committee to ensure nothing weakens the team,” Rijalul said.

The protesters also demanded the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) take swift action to investigate the Bank Century case.

“The case should be handled by the KPK because we no longer believe the police,” he said.

The pro-democracy and student groups protesting also included the Indonesian Youth and Students Union (IMM), the People’s Democratic Defenders (Bendera), the Young People’s Movement Network (Jamper) and the August 1945 Revolution Generation. JG
