Days after Jakarta Police managed to locate missing 14-year-old Marietta Nova Triani, they have tracked down another missing 14-year-old girl in Jakarta, who like Nova Triani went “missing” after hooking up with a boy she got to know over Facebook, the online social networking site.
Stefani Abelina Tiur Napitupulu, a student at Surabaya’s 22 Senior High School, went missing on Sunday and initial suspicions involved her meeting a boy on Facebook.
Stefani’s brother, Bryan, said on Thursday that police finally tracked her down in Jakarta and that her father was on his way to the city to bring her home.
Binsar Napitupulu, Stefani’s father, said he got a “bad feeling” when he was watching news on TV about Nova Triani, and suddenly realized that his daughter had not returned home for the day.
“I just got worried. I immediately reported my fears to the East Java Police,” Binsar said.
He added that he told police that the last he saw his daughter she was driving a Honda Revo motorcycle and that he suspected she had gone to see a boy she met on Facebook.
Binsar told police that she had gone missing after telling him she was going to the Graha Pena building on Jl. Ahmad Yani in Surabaya to support the Development Basketball League.
“I haven’t heard from her since she went to DBL Graha Pena to support her friends. She just disappeared. I then learned that a boy named Jeje or Januar was in contact with her and that he was visiting Surabaya,” Binsar said. “One of her friends, Ayu, saw her last with two boys at Gubeng Train Station in Surabaya. She told me Jeje was 25 years old.”
Jeje lives in a house in Rawasari, East Jakarta, according to police.
Teachers have also complained that Stefani was often absent from school.
“She rarely attended class in January and February,” Wisyudo Abianto, her teacher, said.
Arist Merdeka Sirait, secretary general of the National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA), told the Jakarta Globe that this case showed that people did not yet understand the new technology and the risks it could pose for teenagers.
“It means that neither parents nor children are ready for this technology,” Arist said. “Children shouldn’t put so much information on their pages and pour their hearts out [on Facebook]. We can’t blame the technology as this case shows poor family communication. Parents should understand that their children, especially teenagers, are very unstable so there is a good chance of misusing Facebook. The [parents] need to pay more attention.”
Separately, police in Tangerang said 18-year-old Febriari, alias Ari, would be charged in accordance with the Criminal Code and the Child Protection Law for kidnapping Nova Triani and having sex a minor.
Originally from Surabaya, Nova Triani, who became acquainted with Ari through Facebook, was in Tangerang for a family occasion.
She was later found with Ari in Jakarta.
