The chief of a police precinct in Tangerang was arrested during raids at five nightclubs in West and Central Jakarta on Saturday evening, a police officer said on Sunday.
Bonar Marpaung, head of internal affairs for the Jakarta Police, said the six-hour raid targeted five clubs, including Millennium, Miles and Sidney 2000 in West Jakarta, as well as the Stadium and Eksotik venues in Central Jakarta.
“I don’t know for sure how many policemen were caught, but one of them was the chief of a police precinct in Tangerang district,” Bonar said on Sunday.
The precinct police chief, identified only by his initials YY, was arrested along with three other police personnel. It was not clear which nightclub the four had been visiting or what they were doing at the time of the raid .
The raid was led by Erwin Hasibuan, the head of professional development and security affairs at the Jakarta Police. The operation started around 11 p.m. and wrapped up at 5 a.m., and was targeted at “bad cops.”
Hasibuan, who was contacted by journalists on Sunday, confirmed that YY, a subdistrict police chief who achieved the rank of adjutant commander, had been taken into custody along with three other policemen. “They were caught red-handed on the nightclub premises,” he said.
According to Hasibuan, the raid was performed because personnel had been failing to show up at morning briefing sessions. After further investigation, he said many of them were found to be frequently having “too much fun at the nightclubs .”
Hasibuan said that in addition to their arrest, the four would face professional and disciplinary sanctions. “We will process them,” he said.
Hasibuan said similar raids against errant police would continue until after the presidential election scheduled for July 8.
“Whoever they are, we will arrest and process them accordingly,” he said.
Information obtained from Jakarta Police headquarters indicates that the operation was part of a crackdown that stemmed from a directive handed down by Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Wahyono.
The moves are outlined in a letter that covers a number of security and rules-tightening initiatives ahead of the presidential election.
