Hindu devotees can now book facilities at Sri Sivan Temple over the Internet with the launch of its online portal - the first of its kind for any Hindu temple in Singapore.

The portal will also allow temple- goers to book religious services, prayers and even the type of prasadam (blessed food) that they want at their event.

The website, www.sstsingapore.com, was officially launched on Monday at the temple in Geylang East by S. Iswaran, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs as well as Trade and Industry.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the deity of destruction or transformation.

Iswaran said the new website was an example of "Hinduism evolving in its own way in Singapore."

He said the accessibility that the portal offers would help the community in its current challenge to reach out to young Hindus. "I look forward to Lord Shiva working through the Internet and spreading the word."

Events that can now be booked online include priest services for engagements, weddings and birthdays, naming rituals for infants and children, and death anniversary ceremonies.

Abhishekam, the sacred act of bathing of deities, can also be booked online, with devotees able to choose which deity they want to perform the ceremony for.

Devotees can check the prices for the services they want, as well as the availability of priests for those services.

Temple chairman R. Jayachandran said there are plans to develop a mobile phone application with similar functions.

The website also serves to educate devotees on why each service and ritual is carried out, he said.

Student Sivabalan Kurumbiah, 18, said he felt the temple was going in the right direction in trying to engage youngsters.

"Usually my dad is the one who makes the bookings, but in the future it will be me who has to do it," he said. "I think this is the way future generations will want to book services in the temple."
