Indonesia to Restrict Use of Subsidized Fuel: President
Dion Bisara & Arientha Primanita | February 14, 2012

“Indonesia is a funny nation. Most of us are not rich people yet we like to use a lot of  expensive fuel oil,” said Deputy Mines and Energy Minister Widjajono Partowidagdo. (Bloomberg photo).

i find it surreal that users of subsidized fuel complain that only motorbikes and public transport should muse this fuel,i have watched motorbike users ride down the road smoking and texting on phones,i also learn that parents buy their school aged children motor bikes to enable them to not have the responsibility of having to drop their children off at school,in effect increasing the already over burdened road use and the horrendous amount of accidents which happen on the roads.

the only way in which this or any elected government can reduce the budget is to raise the cost of all fuels, Indonesia is a rapidly raising world power house.and it does need to take into account that there are large segments of the population that are under the national wage minimum and rightfully so that government needs to help these people, but by continuing to subsidize fuel it will not give the population the incentive to try to better their situation.

better to gradually increse the price .

bb; and of course the lady that prefers to go to Singapore doctors and shopping sprees around the world... the one who sold our gas at 1/5 of the world price to her buddies in China...

Already the fact that she is running again is "uniquely Indonesia".... no dignity. no respect. no br***...

Valkyrie - If Indonesia is going to move forward, he and his kind must be gone forever. But how?

Even now they are pumping up for 2014, and there is not one decent choice on the horizon. The choice so far as I can see, is a convicted murderer, the son of the most corrupt dictator in the history of the World, or a man who's company has ruined the lives of thousands. And millions will vote either one of them into power for a t-shirt and a bag of rice.

Sorry but I can only see doom and a great deal of sadness for Indonesians in the foreseeable future.

Won't happen - cheap fuel here is the current opiate of the masses. That and cheap credit to buy motorbikes and cars...

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Monday that the government still intended to restrict the use of subsidized fuel, but the timing of the plan and whether it would involve raising fuel prices were still being worked out.

Speaking at a news conference at the State Palace, Yudhoyono said he had signed a decree barring state vehicles from using Premium, the state-subsidized fuel, but did not say when it would take effect.

Instead, he said only that on April 1 “we have to start the process toward energy conversion,” from oil fuel to natural gas, a process that will take a long time.

The president said he continued to monitor world oil prices and warned that if they continued to rise, the government would consider increasing fuel prices to ease the pressure on the budget.

“However, there is no such option in the state budget. So we would need a process with the House of Representatives,” he said, clarifying that any increase in fuel prices would have to involve the legislative branch.

Economists have said that a restriction on the use of Premium would be tantamount to raising fuel prices, since Premium sells at Rp 4,500 (50 cents) per liter while the higher-octane Pertamax and Pertamax Plus are priced between Rp 8,000 and Rp 9,000 per liter.

Critics have said the government is not yet ready to effectively implement wide-reaching fuel restrictions.
