With Christmas now drawing near, Indonesia’s commitment to protecting the freedom of worship and providing security will again be tested.

Throughout its history, Indonesia has always stood on the side of tolerance. Pluralism is an integral part of its social psyche and national character. Its citizens comprise people from all creeds and religious backgrounds.

The founders of the nation, have been well aware that the future of this multifaceted nation lay in the recognition of differences. The state motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), clearly reflects this.

Their decision to establish a state that provides equal opportunities to all religious groups despite its population being overwhelmingly Muslim, is further evidence of their wisdom.

Indonesians have always celebrated all major religious festivals. It is during these occasions that neighbors visit each other and exchange greetings.

In recent years, however, such religious tolerance has increasingly come under threat from fringe groups who would like to sow discord. Although the majority of Indonesians are more tolerant, these fringe groups are vocal and have been recruiting supporters actively.

Church bombings in various cities have raised fears of shadowy groups attempting similar attacks at this time of the year.

It is crucial for the nation and the security of minority groups that all churches are secured ahead of Christmas celebrations this year.

It is reassuring that the police will launch a special operation to safeguard the festive period between Christmas and New Year’s eve.

National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo assured Christians across the nation that they should not have any worries, but at the same time reminded them to remain alert.

It is also reassuring that some Muslim groups have vowed to help safeguard churches. This is reflective of the true spirit that should prevail in this multiethnic, multireligious country.

We welcome the proactive stance adopted by the security forces in ensuring that all Indonesians can exercise their right to freedom of worship in this country.

This is what makes Indonesia a great nation and a home to all the great religions of the world.
