The Elections Supervisory Board on Tuesday finished an investigation of legislative candidates who were allegedly unqualified.
Wirdianingsih, a member of the board, also known as Bawaslu, said she suspected a secret agreement between political parties and the General Election Commission (KPU) on the listing of candidates with dubious qualifications.
“I think the KPU has a secret agreement with political parties,” she said. “But, it is difficult for us to prove it.”
Bawaslu is to give its recommendation to the KPU today on what to do with the four candidates in question.
Two legislative candidates of the United Development Party (PPP), Moch Mahfud and Ahmad Daeng Ser’e, were investigated by Bawaslu because they were not listed on the temporary candidates list but they appeared on the final candidate lists and ballot papers.
There are also two candidates, Eri Purnomo Hadi of the National Mandate Party and Suwardjono of the Great Indonesia Movement Party, that the KPU suspended. Eri was suspended because he was still a committee member of the state-owned-enterprise BPH Migas while Suwardjono was still working as a government officer.
Fernita Darwis from the PPP campaign team said in the case of the its two candidates, the political party blamed KPU for neglecting to put their names on the temporary candidates list. “We have submitted the files, but the KPU did not put them on the list,” she said, adding she had complained to the KPU on several occasions.
Endang Sulastri, a KPU member who was summoned by Bawaslu, declined to comment on the case. “I’m abstaining from talking,” she said.
Wirdianingsih said Endang refused to clarify the problem.
Previously, a KPU employee sent a letter to Bawaslu admitting that the files were lost during the listing of the candidates.
“However, the person was sick and refused to come,” Endang said. She said political parties had given inconsistent information to the KPU, but Endang refused to sign a written statement on her story.
“Practically, we have no proof,” she said.
In the case of Eri, she said he resigned from his post last month to continue his education. “The reason is unacceptable,” she said. “He should’ve left his post before being nominated as legislative candidate.” Meanwhile, Suwardjono told Bawaslu that he has resigned from his work.
Wirdianingsih said there was still a chance that Bawaslu would recommend the KPU drop the candidates. “The decision will be on Wednesday,” she said.
