The General Elections Commission put its already long-delayed announcement of this year’s legislative election results on hold indefinitely on Tuesday, saying it would wait until all election disputes have been resolved by the Constitutional Court.
The court has ordered revotes and recounts in some districts of Lampung, North Sumatra, Riau and South Sulawesi provinces.
Andi Nurpati, a member of the commission, also known as the KPU, said the they did not want to announce election results twice.
“It’s not clear when the court will release its verdicts,” Andi said, adding that lawmakers were not due to be sworn in until Oct. 1, but that she hoped to unveil their names well before then.
“We’ll try to announce it before Idul Fitri,” she said, referring to the Muslim holiday that falls at the end of Ramadan on Sept. 21-22.
The legislative elections were held on April 9, but legal disputes over how to allocate some of the seats threw the results into uncertainty. An Aug. 9 decision by the Constitutional Court appeared to settle matters, but the House decided to review its methodology once again when some political parties threatened lawsuits.
House Speaker Agung Laksono complained on Tuesday that the delay in announcing results had already caused new lawmakers to miss a planned orientation scheduled for early August.
Law expert Refly Harun of the Center for Electoral Reform echoed those concerns, saying the legislative candidates felt uneasy because “months after the election they’re still not sure whether they’re going to get seats or not.”
