Brightspot Market has quickly become a must-attend event for Jakarta’s funky bunch. It is held every three months in a new spot, and is getting bigger and more diverse each time, with stalls offering “everything cool,” as the organizers say, from jewelry and Polaroid cameras to cookies and mountain bikes.

The organizers handpick designers and vendors who offer something just a little different.

Here are three stalls the Jakarta Globe thinks are worth checking out.

1 SPOUS by Priyo Oktaviano

Indie designer Priyo Oktaviano mans his Brightspot stall himself, which is worth a visit just to meet the warm and quirky fashionista, if not to bag some of his innovative designs.

The 30-year-old studied design in Paris and is celebrated for his sophisticated and elegant women’s lines. But in 2003, he wanted to create something fresh and youthful. And so was born his streetwear line, SPOUS.

His clothing line is experimental yet wearable. Priyo retains a European edge to his designs and fuses it with playful young themes that are found across Asia.

Standing out in his stall is a white knee-length tunic dress with a wild spread of zippers running across the front, bold yellow platform heels and a bold, hand-stitched stuffed teddy-bear that you can pin to your outfit or bag.

The good news is he only makes one or two pieces of each design. “I appreciate that people choose my products, so I like to make it exclusive for them,” he said.

Priyo’s pick:

A navy blue knee-length military-style jacket printed with a traditional Balinese motif. Rp 750,000 ($80)
SPOUS is stocked at Fashion Plus, Senayan City, South Jakarta

2 Tasha D. Gioielli

Tasha D.’s handmade jewelry and clutch bags are luxurious and striking, with a bit of fun thrown in.

Her necklaces, bracelets and hairpieces sparkle with decadence and are designed to jazz up a simple and elegant outfit.

“These pieces are for confident women who aren’t afraid to be different,” she said .

Tasha has studied in Paris and Milan, but her philosophy is to move beyond the big labels on catwalks.

“I’m into ‘high street.’ Haute-couture is long gone. People are less afraid now to be individual, and they are more willing to mix and match,” she said.

Her necklaces are made of a variety of gems and stones, giving them a natural tribal feel. These handmade pieces range from Rp 480,000 to Rp 880,000. She offers a wide collection of dangling earrings that can give a little life to an understated outfit.

Tasha’s pick:

A wristband made of ostrich leg featuring a gemstone monkey. Rp 800,000

3 Amami Cakes & Cookies / Sucre

The two sweet-toothed entrepreneurs behind these brands share a stall at Brightspot and it is definitely worth checking out (they have free samples for you to nibble on!).

Zinnia Nizar Sompie is the woman behind Amami cakes, which include almond, banana, apple and savory tarts, as well as cheesecakes and cookies. She is warm and welcoming, and you can tell that she makes her sweets with plenty of love — but not too much sugar.

“I try and make my products less sweet than those you find in supermarkets,” she said.

Michael Soetantyo makes a rainbow range of marshmallow and sugared jellies for his brand Sucre.

“We use high-quality ingredients. My marshmallows are also not too sweet, so they’re good for adults,” he said.

His marshmallows come in chocolate, banana, melon, orange, grape and strawberry flavors, as well as a range of tea flavors.

By day, Zinnia is a graphic designer and Michael works on a number of fashion-related products — he is the owner of the 707 label, also featured at Brightspot.

All their sales are made to order. They deliver free within South Jakarta and for a small fee for deliveries outside the area.

Zinnia and Michael’s picks:

A sweet almond tart, Rp 25,000, and chocolate marshmallows, Rp 15,000 for a small box, Rp 35,000 for a large one.
