Some of the Indonesian Super League’s top players haven’t enjoyed much success against Persipura Jayapura this season.
As one unit, however, they will have a shot at some redemption when a team composed of the league’s top stars takes on the recently crowned champion in the ISL All-Star Game at Mandala Stadium in Jayapura, Papua on June 29.
The 18-man ISL All-Star team was selected by fans through a poll conducted online and through text messaging. Fans selected two goalkeepers, six defenders, six midfielders and four forwards.
Arema Indonesia keeper Kurnia Meiga got the most votes with 424. Arema and Sriwijaya FC have the most number of players on the squad with four each.
The game between the ISL All-Stars and Persipura will be the highlight of the event, which features the presentation of the trophy to Persipura and the announcement of the Player of the Year award.
Liga Indonesia said three players were vying for the award. They were Bambang Pamungkas of Persija Jakarta, Aldo Barreto of Persiba Balikpapan and Persipura’s Boaz Solossa, the league’s top goal-scorer.
A five-member technical study group from Liga Indonesia will determine the winner.
Despite a tough season in which the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) was thrown into a leadership crisis and three ISL clubs bolted for the rival Indonesian Premier League, Liga Indonesia chief executive Joko Driyono said the ISL season “had gone very well.”
Tobacco firm Djarum, the ISL’s main sponsor, acknowledged this season was “a difficult one” but said it was still looking forward to renewing its deal with the league.
“I’m glad we finished the season, despite all the problems. I’m confident we can continue our relationship with Liga Indonesia next season,” said Fatih Chabanto, a representative of Djarum.
“We’ve been building Indonesian football together, so there’s no reason why we should cut our ties with the league.”
Liga Indonesia has one issue it needs to resolve, though: whether the Indonesian Cup will still be held this year or not.
“Because of the problems at the PSSI, we found it hard to organize the Cup and find sponsors for it,” Joko said. “We might still hold it after the PSSI elections and the fasting month, but we can’t confirm that yet.”
If the Cup was scrapped this year, Joko said ISL runner-up Arema would get a berth in the Asian Champions League playoffs while the third-place team, Persija, would play in the AFC Cup.
“We’ll have to wait for the AFC’s decision on this matter,” Joko said.
