Munich. Bayern Munich regards Manchester City as its biggest rival in Group A of the Champions League and will look to extend its lead over the expensively assembled team when they meet on Tuesday.

Bayern is off to an impressive start both in domestic competition and in the Champions League. The club won 2-0 at Villarreal while Manchester City drew 1-1 with Napoli at home. Napoli hosts Villarreal in Tuesday’s other Group A match.

“If we win, we’ll have a five-point margin over City and that would be a good start,” club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

Bayern has set its sights on winning its fifth title, especially since the Champions League final next May will take place in its own Allianz Arena.

“This is the best Bayern side I’ve ever seen,” Bayern winger Franck Ribery told Kicker magazine on Monday.

Bayern lost its first game of the Bundesliga season but won the next six to open a two-point lead. It has scored 21 goals and conceded only one.

City, which is level on points with Premier League leader Manchester United, can ill afford to lose at Allianz after dropping points at home to Napoli.

“I think we can attack them like we do at home,” City playmaker David Silva said.

“We can stick to our footballing principles. We don’t have to change our style against other teams home or away.”

Bayern’s latest victim in the Bundesliga was fellow Champions League entrant Bayer Leverkusen, which it swept aside 3-0 in such convincing style on Saturday that Leverkusen director Rudi Voeller said Jupp Heynckes’ team is currently playing at the level of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

“It’s going to be difficult to beat us if we play like that,” Bayern midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger said.

“But Tuesday’s match will be our toughest challenge until now in the season.”

Last season’s beaten finalist Manchester United was held to draw by Benfica but should bounce back with victories this week.

United hosts Swiss team Basel and has a raft of injury problems to contend with after Wayne Rooney (hamstring) joined defenders Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling and Rafael and midfielders Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick on the sidelines.

However, the three-time winners still have a deep squad to fall back on.

After Bayern-Man City, the other high-profile game today will see Real Madrid and Ajax — winners of 13 European Cups between them — meet at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Zagreb visits Lyon, which drew 0-0 with Ajax.

Inter Milan slipped to a shock 1-0 home defeat to Trabzonspor to open up Group B but a change in coach, with Claudio Ranieri replacing Gian Piero Gasperini, could shift their fortunes against CSKA Moscow.
