Palembang, South Sumatra. Pelita Jaya managed to avoid relegation from the Indonesian Super League on Tuesday night with a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Persiram Raja Ampat at Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium, South Sumatra.

Pelita was forced into the promotion/relegation playoff by virtue of its 15th place finish in the ISL standings, while opponents Persisam finished fourth in the Premier Division.

Pelita manager Lalu Mara Satriawangsa was overjoyed with the result.

“Finally, we’re staying in the Super League,” Lalu said in phone interview. “Right now, we want to enjoy this victory before thinking about the upcoming season.

Neither team managed to score in the 90 minutes and it was still goalless after extra time. Pelita’s four successive penalty successes were enough to win the match after Persiram players missed twice from the spot.

Persiram’s loss means only three Premier Division clubs earn promotion to the ISL, these being Persibo Bojonegoro, Deltras Sidoarjo and Semen Padang.

Persik Kediri, Persebaya Surabaya and Persitara North Jakarta drop into the second tier.

Meanwhile, Persebaya expressed its disappointment with the league over being forced to forfeit its last ISL match of the season against Persik after the team failed to turn up on Sunday.

Persebaya manager I Gede Widiade filed an official complaint to the Indonesian Football Association’s disciplinary committee on Tuesday.

“PT Liga Indonesia [the league administrator] acted beyond its authority when it took over the match and decided that Persebaya lost 3-0 to Persik as we didn’t show up for the match,” Gede said.

“It should be the disciplinary committee’s decision. PTLI had no right to make the decision.”

The Persik-Persebaya game had been postponed twice — once in April and again on Thursday — because of Persik’s failure to acquire a match permit from the Kediri Police.

Persebaya had been awarded a 3-0 forfeit victory after the first postponement, but Persik successfully appealed the decision, leading to the scheduling of last week’s game.

Persebaya’s decision not to play the game in protest at the revised ruling cost it the chance to topple Pelita from 15th place and appear in the playoff.
