Persiba Balikpapan missed out on an opportunity to move within three points of league-leading Arema Malang after a home draw, while Sriwijaya FC continued its rise up the standings as it broke into the top five.

Sitting second in the Indonesian Super League with a home match on Wednesday, Persiba looked set to trim the six-point edge held by Arema, which had to travel to PSM Makassar. However, the East Kalimantan side could only manage a 1-1 draw with Persema Malang.

It could have ended much worse for Persiba. Persema took the lead after 54 minutes as striker M Kamri scored his fourth goal of the season, and it took Croatian defender Mijo Dadic scoring his first goal for the club two minutes from the end to salvage a point.

Persiba stayed second after the draw with 31 points, five behind Arema and only one better than third-place Persib Bandung, which won 3-1 at Persik Kediri on Tuesday. Persema slipped to seventh.

Sriwijaya had two reasons to celebrate after its 2-0 victory at Persebaya Surabaya. Not only did it manage its second away win of the season, it kept a rare clean sheet in a match featuring two of the Super League’s most porous defenses.

Ambrizal opened the scoring at an empty Gelora 10 November Stadium, heading in an Isnan Ali corner kick. Liberian midfielder Zah Rahan secured the victory in injury time as Sriwijaya climbed five places to fifth with 28 points, one fewer than defending champion Persipura Jayapura.

The match was played behind closed doors as part of Persebaya’s punishment for a brawl among supporters when the club hosted Arema on Jan. 16. Persebaya was punished for failing to provide adequate security for the visiting club.

Wednesday’s other match saw Persisam Samarinda overcome PSPS Pekanbaru 2-0 on goals from Ahmad Sembiring and Ronald Fagundez. Persisam stayed 14th with 19 points, one place and one point above the relegation zone, while PSPS fell to 10th.

Elsewhere, Kediri police identified a man who was stampeded to death before Persik’s match against Persib. Kediri Police chief detective Rofiq said the victim was Supar, 31, from Bangsongan Village in Kediri.

Police confirmed Supar fell from a fence and was trampled to death by other supporters who forced their way into Brawijaya Stadium. Kediri Police chief Rastra Gunawan told state-run news agency Antara police will investigate the incident as reports surfaced suggesting Supar was fighting against other fans before falling from the fence.

Brawijaya Stadium normally holds 15,000 spectators. However, a 50 percent ticket discount commemorating the ninth anniversary of Persikmania, the club’s official supporters’ club, drew more than 25,000 Persik fans.

Tickets were sold out, but those who missed out still tried to force their way into the stadium, breaking through the gates and squeezing themselves into the seats.

Four other fans were hospitalized with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

“We tried hard to control the fans and prevent them from entering the already full stadium, but they were hot-headed and didn’t listen to us,” Persik match organizer Bambang Sumarjono told Antara.

Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) president Nurdin Halid said the PSSI’s disciplinary committee will conduct a thorough investigation.

“We’ll try to find out why the organizers allowed fans to go inside the stadium, despite the fact it was already full,” Nurdin said on Wednesday.
