Defending champion Persipura Jayapura leaped into second place in the overall standings after beating Pelita Jaya 3-1 on Tuesday.

The Black Pearls have been in the top five in recent weeks but made the big jump after winning their first match this season at Mandala Stadium, the club’s home pitch where renovations are near completion.

Sriwijaya FC routed Persisam Samarinda 3-0 to go to fourth place and add some heat on league leader Arema Malang.

In Jayapura, the Black Pearls opened scoring in the eighth minute courtesy of striker Boaz Solossa, before Jajang Mulyana equalized in the 20th.

Brazilian Alberto Goncalves broke the deadlock in the 34th with his 14th goal of the season. Defender Ricardo Salampessey, who had just recovered from an ACL injury, added to the score in the 59th.

In Palembang, Keith Kayamba Gumbs scored and Rahmat Rivai added a goal to lead Sriwijaya, the 2008 champion, past Persisam.

Persipura’s victory was its ninth of the season, giving it 35 points, while Sriwijaya now has 34 points to tie Persiba Balikpapan but is fourth on goal difference. Arema, which has held the top spot for several weeks, has 39.

At Pendidikan Stadium in Wamena, Eddie Foday Boakay scored a double as Persiwa Wamena defeated Persitara North Jakarta 3-0 to end a winless spell of four matches. Persitara fell to a league-worst 12th loss and stayed bottom with 15 points, one behind Pelita.

Persela Lamongan was held to a 2-2 draw by Persijap Jepara at Surajaya Stadium in Lamongan.

Meanwhile, Persik Kediri named Agus Yuwono as the club’s new head coach, replacing Gusnul Yakin who was appointed assistant manager.

“We felt we had to refresh the squad in order to get better results,” Persik spokesman Nur Mukhyar said after a team management meeting on Monday.

The White Tigers, who won league titles in 2003 and 2006, sit at 15th with 22 points, just four points above the relegation zone. They have won only five of 19 matches this season and failed to win in their last six games.

Gusnul said he didn’t challenge the team’s decision.

“After losing 1-0 to Sriwijaya FC [on Saturday], I told management I was ready to give way if it was for the improvement of the team,” he said.

Agus, 39, is coaching for the first time in the country’s topflight league. Before moving to Persik early this season, he was an assistant coach at Persela Lamongan (2007-2009), Persema Malang (2004-2007) and Arema Malang (2000-2004).

“I’m not promising any instant progress. Let’s do this slowly but surely,” said Agus, who will debut against Arema on Thursday.
