Rahmad Darmawan’s coaching tenure at Pelita Jaya got off to a rough start in a 2-0 loss to Persija Jakarta in the Indonesian Super League on Monday.
Defender Ismed Sofyan served up goals for Fabiano Beltrame and Pedro Javier Velazquez at Manahan Stadium in Solo. The result was a welcome one for Persija, which jumped up six places in the league table to sixth place with 13 points from six matches.
The victory was Persija’s second in a row away from home, having beaten PSPS Pekanbaru 2-0 on the road on Jan. 15.
“That was my first win against a team that was coached by Rahmad Darmawan,” Kemayoran Tigers coach Iwan Setiawan said. “The players worked very hard to get the win.”
The match was moved to Solo after Karawang Police refused to issue a permit that would allow Pelita to host it at Singaperbangsa Stadium. Instead, Rahmad’s first match in charge of the Bakrie-family owned club following his resignation from the Under-23 national team last month took place at a neutral venue.
It was a reunion of sorts for Rahmad and some Persija players, with the coach having been in charge of the capital club in 2005-06 and 2010-11. His former charges put any respect aside, though, and pressured Pelita right from the kickoff.
It only took four minutes for Persija to go in front as Beltrame headed in Ismed’s free kick. Velazquez doubled the lead in the 56th, converting from close range after an Ismed corner kick.
Pelita slipped to 11th place in the standings with 11 points from nine matches.
Despite the loss, Rahmad said he was pleased with his squad’s performance.
“We played well, but Persija was great,” he said. “What made the difference was that Persija played with more patience and was more clinical in front of our goal.”
