With world governing body FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation wading in to help deal with the country’s internal strife, the Indonesian Football Savior Committee appears to be softening its stance.
The committee known as the KPSI is now willing to take part in an ordinary congress organized by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) scheduled for March 18. FIFA has told the PSSI to hold its annual congress by March 20, in line with its statutes, and provide a forum to resolve the conflict or face sanctions.
Still, the KPSI plans to hold its own meeting on Saturday as a warm-up for the March congress, committee secretary general Hinca Panjaitan said on Wednesday.
“The idea of extraordinary congress is still alive. We will select members of the electoral committee and electoral appeals committee at the March 18 congress,” he added.
The KPSI originally called for an extraordinary congress to elect new leadership, claiming its had the support of 452 of 588 PSSI members. The governing body declared only 320 of the signatures valid, though, leaving the effort short of the two-thirds threshold.
Hinca said the KPSI had invited all PSSI members, including chairman Djohar Arifin Husin and members of the executive committee, to its event in Jakarta.
“Djohar always talks about reconciliation, but he didn’t want to meet the PSSI’s own members when we wanted to meet him. It will provide a good forum for PSSI officials to reconcile, apologize and maybe resign from their posts,” KPSI chairman Tony Apriliani said.
