A third Papuan team will join the top-flight next season as Persidafon Dafonsoro beat Bontang FC 3-2 in a promotion/relegation playoff on Thursday.
Persidafon fought back from a goal down at Kanjuruahan Stadium in Malang, East Java to earn a spot in the Indonesian Super League, while relegating Bontang to the Premier Division in the process.
It will be Persidafon’s first time to play in the top-tier since the club was established in 1970. The two other Papuan clubs in the ISL are three-time champion Persipura Jayapura and Persiwa Wamena.
Bontang stunned the Papuans when Japanese striker Kenji Adachihara hit past goalkeeper I Putu Dian on 12 minutes, as the East Kalimantan club held on to a 1-0 lead until halftime.
Persidafon kicked up a gear in the second half, and Agus Yuwono’s side was rewarded with an equalizer from Lukas Rumkambu who found the net three minutes after the restart.
Persidafon took the driver’s seat in the 56th off a Juan Marcelo Cirelli spot kick after Rasmoyo was brought down by Arifki Eka Putra.
Bontang wasn’t going quietly, however, as Mohammad Istigfar leveled the match in the 65th.
Patrick Wanggai, who came on in the 60th for Edison Ames, didn’t take long to put Bontang back on the defensive as he scored the winner in the 66th.
Persidafon is the fourth Premier Division club to secure a spot in the ISL.
Premier Division champion Persiba Bantul, runner-up Persiraja Banda Aceh and Mitra Kukar, were also promoted as the ISL looks to return to an 18-team format next season.
The league was reduced to 15 clubs this year after PSM Makassar, Persema Malang and Persibo Bojonegoro bolted for the rival Indonesian Premier League.
