Months of slog, sweat and occasional tears come to a head on Saturday when hundred s of budding Lionel Messis and Wayne Rooneys converge on the British International School (BIS) in Jakarta for a football feast.

The Jakarta School Football Association season, which started in January, comes to a climax with the finals of the Greenfield Cup titles.

A thousand young players, their parents and guests are expected to attend at the school in Pondok Aren, Tangerang, with the event involving so many people that it has had to be split into two parts: the under-8 and under-10 finals matches will be played on Saturday morning, starting at 9:15, while the older groups (under-12, under-14 and under-16) start at 3:30 p.m.

The day is not confined to football, but features a gala fun day and ceremony, with Italian footballer Franco Baresi, a celebrated former defender for Milan, making an appearance at the prize-giving, including signing and giving away Milan shirts.

Sekolah Tiara Bangsa-ACS and host BIS A team will kick off the day as they vie for the under-8 trophy in the final. Another BIS A team will play in the under-10 final against SDI Al-Azhar.

The STB-ACS under-12 team kicks off the afternoon session against Jakarta International School United, BIS-A will fight for the trophy against JIS United in the under-14 final and JIS United versus Kampong Jombang will close the competition in under-16.

Jakarta International School coach Phil Pyburn was adamant that the school’s team, which also won the U-12 and U-14 Coca-Cola League title this season, could finish the season on a high.

“We’ve had a pretty comfortable ride so far this season and our team has been basically together over the past four years in the league. This counts for a lot. It has been an enjoyable experience for everybody and we look forward to the final,” Pyburn told the JSFA Web site.

The league wrapped up last weekend. The A division titles have gone pretty much according to form, with BIS and JIS dominating — each with two titles — and Sekolah Tiara Bangsa-ACS taking the U-8 league trophy.

JSFA chairman Brian J Dallamore said it had been a successful year for the organization, with more children participating.

“The organization is now 20 percent bigger than last year, with 132 participating teams from 53 schools,” said Dallamore, who will end his tenure as chairman after the season ends.
