Purple Nation: Cory Booker Got It Right — And the GOP Got It Wrong

By Lanny J Davis | 11:12am May 25, 2012

The attacks on Newark, NJ, Mayor Cory Booker (D) by the more vitriolic liberal commentators for what he said about Bain Capital on this past Sunday’s “Meet the Press” are just as indefensible as the Republican Party’s cynical and dishonest attempt to exploit and distort what the mayor actually said during the program.

Same-Sex Marriage – A Matter for States to Decide, or a Constitutional Right?

By Lanny J Davis | 8:53am May 18, 2012

I can understand and respect President Obama for making the political and pragmatic decision to take the first, courageous step to state his own personal position supporting same-sex marriage, while allowing states and local communities some time to decide for themselves.

Purple Nation: Obama and the Polls – Half-Full or Half-Empty?

By Lanny J Davis | 9:31am May 10, 2012

Virtually every poll in the last two weeks — Gallup, Democracy Corps, USA Today, Rasmussen, New York Times/CBS — shows that Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are in a dead heat nationally as well as in the nine battleground states.

Holder, Fast and Furious, and the Double Standard

By Lanny J Davis | 1:07pm May 3, 2012

Purple Nation: My Chuck Colson Lesson

By Lanny J Davis | 4:33pm Apr 26, 2012

I learned an important lesson that night: I vowed that I would never use the word “hate” about people in politics with whom I disagreed. And I knew I would never forget this moment and what Charles Colson had taught me.

Why a Revolution in North Korea Is Unlikely to Occur

By Thomas Andrikus | 10:47am Apr 26, 2012

Unlike the recent uprisings which have happened early last year in several countries in Northern Africa and Middle East, it is futile to wish that a similar revolution in North Korea will ever happen. The citizens of North Korea are also not united by any thread whatsoever. Nobody dares to revolt against Jong-un’s regime.

This Week in Colombia: On Secret Service Scandal and Hillary 'Hillz' Clinton

By Abdul Qowi Bastian | 9:10am Apr 21, 2012

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton was out partying (and drinking beers!) at the Cafe Havana in Cartagena, Colombia. Although a few critics jeered at her actions — which most see as an impropriety — Hillary only reinforced her popularity among the younger demographics.

Purple Nation: Obama and Romney on Buffett Rule – Both Right … and Wrong

By Lanny J Davis | 10:58am Apr 19, 2012

In other words, both President Obama and Mitt Romney are right about criticizing the other’s overhyped position on the Buffett Rule, and both are wrong not to endorse the one honest bipartisan proposal that would honestly attack the national debt: the Simpson-Bowles commission’s proposal to cut spending, raise taxes by closing loopholes and reform and reduce future hemorrhaging of Social Security and Medicare.

Purple Nation: Shapiro’s 'The Last Great Senate' a Must Read

By Lanny J Davis | 11:22am Apr 17, 2012

For anyone interested in understanding why one of the great institutions of democratic government in the world — the United States Senate — has become so dysfunctional and paralyzed by partisanship, Ira Shapiro’s recently published book 'The Last Great Senate: Courage and Statesmanship in Times of Crisis', should be mandatory reading — not only by pundits and political science classes, but by every member of today’s Senate.
