More than 120 professional women’s golfers from around the world will compete in the inaugural Golflink Resorts Ladies Open 2010 at the New Kuta Resort in Bali beginning on Friday.
The first open women’s golf tournament in the country will host golfers from Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland, Thailand and Vietnam.
Ten Indonesia amateurs are also expected to compete.
Among the bodies cooperating to launch the event are the Ladies Asia Golf Tour and the Indonesian Golf Association, supported by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
“The participation of golfers from various countries and regions will certainly tighten competition,” tournament director Suprapto Pegeng said in a statement.
Duncan Weir, R&A director of golf development, said his organization would continue supporting such tournaments in the name of developing golf in Asia.
“The R&A will add financial support in 2010 for golf progress in Asia,” Weir said.
“Golf development in other regions has been slow to progress, but not in Asia.”
Chinese golfer Zhang Na, a four-time winner on the Japan LPGA Tour in 2007, returns to action in Bali after spending much of the last year sidelined with a back injury.
“I’m fine physically, but I need to be a little more confident as I’ve been laid off for about a year,” the 28-year-old said in a press release.
