Indonesian health authorities announced on Friday that after thorough testing, all infant formula milk products in Indonesia, both locally produced and imported, are free from contamination by harmful bacteria.
"After re-testing infant formula milk of all brands and variants which are available in the market in 2011, we conclude that there is no Enterobacter sakazakii contamination," Trihono, head of research and development agency at the Ministry of Health, said at a press conference.
More than 180 samples from 47 brands of infant formula milk for babies aged zero to six months were tested, including the popular Bebelac, Enfamil and SGM. The health ministry's research and development agency carried out the test by joining forces with the National Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM) and IPB.
The test started in February and ended in June.
Health minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih said the test was conducted to answer the mounting public pressure on the health ministry to reveal the results of a 2006 study by a researcher from Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB).
The IPB researcher had claimed that their initial test found that several brands of infant formula milk were contaminated by Enterobacter sakazakii, which in high concentrations could cause acute diarrhea and meningitis in newborns.
"Actually, every year BPOM conducts such tests but we decided to have a more comprehensive test due to public demand. Three institutions were involved in the test and each confirmed the others' results,” Endang said.
The dispute about formula milk safety started when public consumer advocate David ML Tobing filed a legal suit to the Ministry of Health, IPB and BPOM, demanding that they reveal the brand names of the tainted formula milk.
