Officials at the Red Cross Hospital in Bogor said a 7-week-old baby girl brought in on Tuesday had died of severe malnutrition after being fed an exclusive diet of rice porridge.
Yudha, a hospital spokesman, said that when the baby, Khalifah, was brought to the hospital, she weighed just 2.1 kilograms, far less than the normal weight of around 4 kilograms for a child of that age.
“Because she was in such critical condition when she was brought in, the chances of her surviving were very small,” he said.
The baby had been left with the mother’s parents in Bogor a week after she was born. The grandmother said that because the mother did not provide any breast milk, she had no option but to feed the baby rice porridge.
Her health began deteriorating last week, and by the time she was brought to the hospital, she was already in critical condition.
