489629JPB: You're friggin hilarious! My tummy hurts! Just imagine being kidnapped by a bunch of meek, Jesus loving Christians, locked in a room and sung to! What else did they do to the poor confused Muslim becak drivers (who happen to be the strongest old men I've ever seen in my life)? Force them to receive foot massages? Mend tears in their trousers? Pour them warm milk? Like Dez said, you're latching onto propaganda and getting carried away. Plus the comparison to the violence and discrimination suffered by Christians in this country is hardly at the same level. Stop defending the undefensible.
Oh and JPB.. u're right! Christians r just as messed up. Most of us r against religion indoctrination here. Yes all religion is harmful more than it is good, please checkout the # of deaths since the start of "religion", with different names it's all the same disease that kills more human than viruses & bacterias combined. Now on the other hand a belief is very personal,& it can't be forced. Individual must seek it themselves to open their mind, free from these so called "holy" books written by other human. U can do a survey on the street asking people if they believe in religion,& how it came about in their life, u'll notice a similar trend (yes I did this survey in the US), the trend is that most ppl are sheeps,& they don't even know the very reason why they follow religion in the first place, they just follow the herd. I once was lost, but now am found. Was blind, but now I see (very clearly how messed up religion is)
Is the message abt "smoking is haraam" not out yet? I think this can be a catch-22 situation opportunity to exploit. If u're muslim u shouldn't smoke, bcs smoking is haraam, but if u already smoke, & u are already addicted to it, then u're breaking the haraam code on daily basis,& u shouldn't be muslim any longer,& if u are not muslim any longer, u can smoke but smoking is addictive,& all the other religion also cite addiction as a form of sin,& if u're not in any way religious & pro-free-choice, then u also can't smoke because that infringes on the choices of other non-smoker eg. babies. Lol, actually not so catch-22, coz either way one chooses, smoking is actually violating many rules, except for the rules of govt tax earning & tobacco giant's pocket.
@jpb: seriously, why are you so afraid of a gospel singer singing for you while you sit in your becak?!! I have several mosques built nicely within my residential area and their chanting shouting for prayers are forced down to my ears at least 5 times a day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, while I sit, eat, watch tv, on the phone, shower, sleep, etc etc. I don't think nobody ever try to justify anything, this is simply part of living in peace and respecting your neighbors, and I guarantee that most of us are always surprised why there are still paranoid so-called peace-loving civilized majority Indonesian Muslims like you, FPI, Garis etc..
JPB
no it wasnt, noone was forced, noone was kidnapped, your source is pure hate propaganda. If they had been kidnapped then the islamic ministry would have ensured they all got arrested and spent 5 years in jail and you know it. Nobody was arrested let alone imprisoned
So stop trying to use one incident which you have blown out of proportion to justify your hatred and besides that the violence v Christians had started long before this incident.
Stop deflecting and start defending all your brothers and sisters who ignore the Koran by smoking..
The Ministry of Health wants the support of the country’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama, in implementing tobacco regulations.
Tjandra Yoga Aditama, the director general of disease control and environmental health at the ministry, said on Friday that he, along with Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih, met with Islamic leaders to explain how the regulations, which form a part of the of the 2009 Health Law, would be implemented.
“Basically, we explained what this regulation is about, how dangerous tobacco addiction is, and that we need help to successfully implement it because it would be impossible without the help of every stakeholder, including NU,” he said.
Tjandra said support from NU was crucial because it has more than 30 million followers. “NU has explained their stance about tobacco and the leaders have promised they will bring this issue to their national meeting, and now we’ll just have to wait for their decision,” he said.
Tjandra said he acknowledged there was some concern from NU’s followers who are also tobacco farmers that the regulation would kill their livelihoods.
“But we have explained again and again that this regulation does not prohibit people from smoking, it is just trying to protect children and pregnant women from the health risk from being exposed to tobacco,” he said.
Numerous NU clerics are heavy smokers, the organization’s deputy chairman, Slamet Effendy Yusuf told the Jakarta Globe.
He said that there were debates on the new regulations proposed by the government, which aim to control tobacco and protect young people from the addictive chemicals in cigarettes.
He said that he fully supported the new regulation, expected to be issued soon, “but what about others? There are many others who do not share my idea,” he said.
NU secretary general, Marsudi Syuhud said that the group had declared that smoking is allowed, because smoking is not banned in the Muslim doctrine. If anyone thinks otherwise, they should study it further, he said.
He said NU could not yet give its full support to the proposed government regulation because the organization had not yet thoroughly considered it.
Muhammadiyah, the second largest Muslim organization in the country, has previously issued a fatwa stating that smoking is considered haram , or sinful according to religious law, as they consider the activity to be a form of suicide.
