The Health Ministry on Thursday said that it will soon send a team to Tangerang to investigate allegations of malpractice at a hospital there that had led to the loss of a baby girl’s finger.
“We just want to explain that the ministry will send a team to investigate the alleged malpractice immediately,” Chairul Rajab Nasution, the ministry’s director of health education and reference, told a press conference.
The press conference had been delayed for about three hours, to wait for representatives from the Awal Bros Hospital in Tangerang where the malpractice allegedly took place, to come. They did not show up.
“We want the public to know that we’re handling this matter very seriously. If the hospital is found guilty, we will take firm action ranging from administrative sanctions to a revocation of their operating license.”
The case occurred in November when an 8-month-old baby was admitted to the emergency ward of Awal Bros Hospital suffering from seizures and high fever.
As part of treatment measures, doctors inserted an Intravenous drip into her right hand.
However, the little finger on that hand soon turned blue and developed necrosis, the death of body tissue that occurs when the blood flow is cut off.
Doctors then had to amputate her finger.
The girl’s parents, Linda Kurniawati and Budy Katjana, have since filed suit against the hospital for Rp 3.5 billion ($400,000) in damages.
Hospital officials declined to comment on the case.
