The Tangerang administration is joining forces with the Mochtar Riady Institute for Nanotechnology to offer free treatment through local community health centers for patients with hepatitis B.
Mochtar Riady, the founder of the institute, said that under the terms of the agreement signed on Monday, the MRIN, which like the Jakarta Globe is affiliated with the Lippo Group, would fully support the local administration in research and funding for a hepatitis B prevention program.
“If there any patients who test positive for hepatitis B, the MRIN will also provide antiviral medication for them for two years to prevent the disease developing into cirrhosis or liver cancer,” he said.
Indonesia has the third-highest number of hepatitis B sufferers in the world after China and India.
